In the world there are many breeds of dogs and their behavior is based on how they were bred and in the case of pit bull dogs they can be trained and bred for different roles in society from being a quiet pet to having professions such as police dogs, for therapies, rescues and more…
Pit bull terriers are known as some of the most aggressive and dangerous dogs, but pit bull dogs are actually a very docile and protective breed with children.
Police Pitbull Training:
To begin with a partner is selected to the dog (pitbull) with which it will relate throughout his life to generate a social bond of both and initial training is performed which is between the first 8 weeks to 6 months. a type of training for dogs pass many tests, and specify the type of activity to be performed within the police team some positions are:
- Public order control: This is the main role for the pit bull breed in this training the dogs are made to attack through the commands of their partner, it starts with toys, then practice partners until they have total control to capture criminals.
- Control and detection of illicit substances.
- For tracking.
- For people search.
As the dog’s training progresses, they are given a nutritional diet and in some cases they are given muscle supplements for dogs in order to improve their physical condition.
Pitbull rescue dog training:
To train your pitbull dogs so that he can focus on finding people in danger you must take into account the necessary characteristics for this such as his sense of smell, his night vision, intelligence and his ears.
To start with a basic training in which you will perfect basic commands such as “sit, stay, call his name”, then teach him to follow a small scent trail at short distances in this way you will stimulate his sense of smell and you can increase its difficulty gradually. It is also useful to change the environment where he will be looking for the object or person for training.
Finally make him train together with other rescue dogs so that he can get used to work together and in the future start doing rescue simulations in field training.

Training for Pitbull therapy dogs:
Before training a therapy dog. They must be reliable, balanced, have predictable behavior, be controllable (with good obedience), be suitable for a certain task and have the ability to inspire confidence. Once we have the right dog, we will start a basic obedience training, in order to incorporate the skills of a therapy dog.
Basic Obedience is considered to be those commands that give us control over the animal such as: sit, down, stay, stand and together among others.
Some of the therapy exercises that dogs will perform are:
- Resting the head on the user’s lap.
- Picking up an object and leaving it in the hand of a user or guide.
- Carrying an object from one user to another.
- Tapping the nose of the user.
- Passing under the legs (bridging).
- Passing under the legs while walking.
- Climbing on the lap.
- Learning to take treats on command.
- Kissing on command.
- Barking on command.
- Go through hoops (jumping).
- Sitting inside the hoop and letting the hoop out.
- Placing the dog lying down next to the dog handler.
- Placing the dog on top of a lying user.
- Salute (paw).
- Beg, Tug & Play.
- Keeping still and relaxed on a table (combing, placing scarves, leashes…).
- Dead.
Basic training for pitbull pet dogs:
Before your new life companion arrives you must think about what limits he will have the family must take him into account so as not to confuse him have thought of some names to make his training easier later on.
When he arrives, the first thing you should do is to adapt him to different environments and allow him to interact with other dogs, people and animals of different species. This will prevent him from developing fearful behaviors.
Try to avoid scolding and encourage positive reinforcement, when he does something wrong just say “NO” firmly so that he understands and whenever you can use positive reinforcement.
When you get home it is important that he is accompanied at all times to relieve stress, teach him to stay alone little by little.
Teach him to identify his name so that he pays attention to you (use positive reinforcement, petting, treats).
Basic obedience: basic tricks such as sit, down, stay and come when you hear his name are basic commands that every puppy should learn.
Teach your pitbull terrier not to hurt you by biting you, this will be very useful in his future behavior, avoid playing too much with your hands, it is better to use toys, in case he bites you and it hurts, tell him “no” and give him a toy and ignore him for a while, with this he will understand that it is wrong to bite you with certain force.
Training, in short sessions. You can practice with him in sessions of between 2 and 5 minutes, which is the average time a puppy usually lasts.
Exercises for pit bull dogs:
Not only is a training enough to have a dog, obedient , that takes care of you, if not it is also good to do exercises type game and entertainment for him there are several exercises and games so you can share quality time together with your pet.
Some of these are:
Going for a run:
Running is one of the basic canine sports to gain endurance and musculature of the dog, running has many benefits to improve health as it accelerates metabolism, to improve cartilage or to regenerate muscle.
Pit bull dogs can easily adapt to any environment but it is advisable to run on flat terrain at the beginning, and with the passing of time they can increase the difficulty by changing the environment to one of beach or uphill slopes and the time to perform this activity is 5 to 10 minutes, motivating him to see the exercise in a positive way.
Ball and Frisbee:
These games are quite recommended to stimulate reflexes, mobility and help practice fetching objects. Teaching your dog to “fetch” is not very complicated and offers a lot of fun time.
In the case of pitbull dogs it is recommended to use a very resistant frisbee due to the powerful jaw that this breed of dog has. It is important not to abuse this game in a very continuous way because it can increase the dog’s stress by generating an overstimulation becoming an obsessive activity.
Tug and Loosen:
In this game you can teach your dog the command “leave” which is very important when you want to train him because he learns to leave the objects that he is biting, for this exercise you can use a biter or a knot to hold from both sides while your dog nibbles the center.
It is important to let him win sometimes but in other occasions we are the ones who must win is something fundamental for the protection of resources.
It is normal that some dogs growl during the game, for fun, however, if he acquires a hostile attitude and comes to mark us, we must end the game and remove the toy with caution (negative punishment: the withdrawal of a desired stimulus to an unwanted behavior) and work on the “let” before practicing it again.
Swimming:
It is a complete exercise especially if the dog has a correct association with the water since this exercise allows us to reinforce its musculature 6 times more than any other exercise or training that can be given. In case the dog is afraid of the water we must work previously in a positive way and not throw him directly because you could traumatize him.
The benefits of swimming for your dog is that you will gain more elasticity and mobility, improve their joints and flexibility, it is also good for overweight dogs because the impact is softer compared to running.
Obstacle course:
With this exercise you can also help your dog improve in different areas as it is a complete activity, which stimulates the mind and body, it is usually a sport where faster breeds such as border collie or Australian shepherd dogs stand out, but pitbull terrier dogs can also perform all tasks in a spectacular way if they are trained regularly.
